Which came first? The product or the platform? The business world is divided into two sectors: product-first companies, and platform-first companies, but both carry different advantages.

According to Erik Brynjolfsson, Faculty Director of the MIT Sloan Digital Business Strategy online short course, there’s a dual relationship when it comes to product versus platform, and finding the balance between the two will be a key driver of business success in the digital economy.
Digital Business Strategy: Harnessing Our Digital Future
This MIT Sloan online short course investigates the principles that frame esteemed MIT faculty, and New York Times best-selling authors, Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee’s research. It focuses on a unique approach to business strategy that attempts to find a balance between traditional methods and new ways companies can harness transformative technology to improve best practices.
This program focuses on the rebalancing of three key relationships: human minds and machines; physical products and digital platforms; and the core (centralized knowledge) and the crowd (decentralized knowledge). It’s through these lenses that you’ll explore the potential of disruptive technology for business, equipping you to drive digital transformation within your own organization.
Course start date: 12 February 2020 (6 weeks)
